Another Year, Similar Stories

Coincidentally enough it’s been exactly a year since I last posted, and this time last year saw some similar sports stories drifting through the news. A year ago the talk was about how the US Men’s soccer team blew their shot in the 2011 FIFA World Cup, now the buzz is about how the Women’s team scored a miraculous goal in the 122’ minute against Brazil in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Women’s World Cup. A year ago the talk was about whether Tiger Woods could make a comeback. The talk now? Will Tiger Woods be able to make a comeback? A year ago LeBron James chose to take his talents to South Beach. Now, fresh off of a defeat in the Finals, fans wonder if he made the right choice. Last July, at the All Star Break, the Braves were playing good baseball with a record of 52-36. This year the Braves are again playing superb baseball with a record of 54-38.

The sports landscape has also seen plenty of change. As I write this, both the NFL and NBA are in the midst of lockouts. Rumor has it the NFL will soon reach agreements, but sources close to the NBA say the league is at risk to lose the 2011-2012 season in full. In this part of the country, where College Football is king, the SEC looks to be adding a new power to it’s mix. After last year’s flirt with an SEC Championship, the South Carolina Gamecocks are looking to make their mark. With an SEC East title under coach Steve Spurrier’s belt, it looks as if a program long in the making is finally ready to see some fruits of labor.

I’m going to start using this blog on a regular basis to display the American Sports landscape in my view. While From the Stands will look at all major sports stories and themes, it will focus a majority of writing on my particular interests: mainly the South Carolina Gamecocks, Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks, and SEC Football.
